  Lake Erie

Cleveland Division of Water (CWD) uses surface water drawn from four intakes in Lake Erie as the source of our drinking water. Lake Erie is a part of the Great Lakes watershed. Water entering Lake Erie comes from the upstream Great Lakes. Superior, Michigan and Huron contribute 95%.  The remaining 5% comes from rain and snow in the Lake Erie drainage basin including the streams and rivers that flow into Lake Erie.

Surface waters, such as lakes and rivers, are accessible and can be contaminated by chemicals and disease causing organisms. Our intake systems, located a considerable distance offshore, greatly minimize contamination from rivers, streams and other nearby sources. No single treatment process can address all possible contaminants. We use a multiple barrier process to treat Lake Erie water in order to meet drinking water quality standards.

The average hardness for Cleveland's water is 120 mg/L.

Common Minerals

Calcium and magnesium create one of the most notable changes in your water. As a result, these tasteless minerals dissolve in the water and create hard water. Specifically, hard water poses no health risk. Although, it can create numerous challenges for the consumer. The higher the hardness the more effort it takes for soap to perform its cleansing action. Hard water leaves soap deposits in sinks, dishes and glassware. Also, it can create scaly calcium deposits on faucets, shower heads and coolers. An ion exchange water softener removes calcium and magnesium ions by replacing them with sodium or potassium. Water Softener

City Water

Our most popular City Water Softener/Conditioner: Premium Dual Purpose Water Softener Conditioner replaces Culligan®, Sears®, Kinetico®, Ionics®, RainSoft®, EcoWater®, Hague® and virtually all others. Firstly, you can change the media in it if your water changes. Secondly it takes care of taste, smells, odors, dry skin, stiff or coarse clothing, chemicals and soap scum. Thirdly it gives you luxurious suds. Finally, it raises your quality of life (at a fraction of the cost). Basically, one unit does it all without mixing media which is not recommended.

Finally, if you are on a sodium-restricted diet, you may need the addition of a Reverse Osmosis unit starting at just $239. Reverse Osmosis Systems
