City Water Treatment System Advice

Firstly, you should determine if you have well water or city water. Any water that is chlorinated by anyone other than the homeowner is classified as city water. Non-chlorinated water is not considered city water. We treat almost all water that is not chlorinated as we treat well water or spring water.

Secondly, the thing you should determine is what it is about your water that you want to correct. This may be hard water, chlorine removal, taste, odors, other chemicals or a combination of these.

For instance, if you are seeing white spots on dishes or shower and sink fixtures, or if your soap does not lather up the way it should, these symptoms are typically characteristic of hard water levels and a standard water softener will resolve these issues. After that, the next thing you should decide is if you want to remove chlorine and other impurities as well. Carbon filtration would accomplish this. There are two main types of carbon filtration; backwashing filter tanks and in line cartridges. The difference is the amount of maintenance involved. Both methods will provide the same result. The in line cartridge typically needs changed every six to twelve months. On the other hand, the carbon media, for the backwashing filter tank, needs changed every three to seven years depending on usage.

Certainly, it is never a bad idea to obtain a water report to know what is in your water. In most city water situations, if you call the number on your water bill, they will provide you with a water quality report. Here are some other ways to get your water tested:

Getting your water independently tested is a good thing to do. There are several FREE testing suggestions below.

Paid Testing

One way to get testing is to simply look under "laboratories" in the Yellow Pages. If you choose this method be sure to call several to compare prices as labs vary greatly in their pricing. You can usually find one that will check your iron, pH, hardness and TDS quite inexpensively. But sometimes for a few dollars more, they will give you a very wide range of tests (recommended) and we understand what it all means as a rule. Simply tell us what is in the water and we will get the solution right every time.

CAUTION: NEVER let someone that sells water equipment test your water; especially the ones that try to come into your home. Always try to get it tested by someone that does NOT sell water equipment.

FREE WATER TESTING: Many swimming supply stores do testing for FREE and are pretty accurate. You can also send a sample to us and we will test it for FREE. And while we always tell you to let someone independent test it so you can trust the results; you can trust that we will test it and be honest about the results should you need us to.
