 OUTDOOR WATER SOFTENERS:
The first thing to remember when considering installing a water softener outdoors is that you don't want it to freeze with water inside. If you live in Minnesota installing ANY backwashing filter outside in the elements is not a good idea. But this is a normal practice in Florida, Texas, California and some other parts of the country. Also remember that you can install most of our water softeners and backwashing filters "In the ground". Originally it was our customers who taught us this. California residents have earthquakes, Texas residents have Tornados and Scorching heat in the summer and Florida residents have Hurricanes. Digging a hole and putting the backwash tank in it with just the control valve sticking out not only insulates the tanks; it also stabilizes them. Some people just rent an auger from the local rental yard for $20 or so and poke a hole in the ground in less than 5 minutes. Others use the old hand shovel method to accomplish this. If you are going to dig it out by shovel it may be a good idea to wet the ground for a few days before digging; especially in Texas.
